Das Pina Bausch Zentrum entsteht als ein internationaler Ort für Tanz und Performance, Kunst und Begegnung, Tradition und Zukunftslabor. Das denkmalgeschützte Wuppertaler Schauspielhaus und ein flexibler Neubau sollen durch einen attraktiven Baukörper zu einem neuen Ganzen verbunden werden. Damit besteht die seltene Chance der Erfindung und Entwicklung einer interdisziplinären Kunst- und Kulturinstitution für das 21. Jahrhundert. Der erste Preis im internationalen Architekturwettbewerb ging an Diller Scofidio + Renfro, New York, eines der weltweit führenden Architekturbüros.

Bis zur Eröffnung befindet sich das Pina Bausch Zentrum „under construction“ und bereitet die Zukunft vor, indem es sich durch Veranstaltungen und Projekte mit den Menschen und Akteur*innen der Stadt wie auch international vernetzt.

Ein Ort für alle

„Das Pina Bausch Zentrum soll ein Raum für Alle werden. Weltspitze im Tanz verbindet sich so mit der Weltspitze in der Architektur. Pina Bauschs Werk ist für Nordrhein-Westfalen und Deutschland einzigartig,“ so Kulturministerin Ina Brandes

Das Zentrum lädt Menschen aller Generationen, Kulturen und Hintergründe ein, Kunst in ihrer Vielfalt zu erleben und aktiv mitzugestalten. Als Begegnungsraum für Tanz, Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft wird es ein Impulsgeber für die Stadt Wuppertal und die internationale Kulturlandschaft. Hier wird Tradition mit Innovation verbunden – ein lebendiges Archiv des Werkes von Pina Bausch und zugleich ein Labor für die Kunst und Kultur von morgen.

Das Pina Bausch Zentrum ist ein Projekt der Stadt Wuppertal, gefördert durch das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen und den Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch und der Pina Bausch Foundation.

Pina Bausch Centre under construction!

The Pina Bausch Centre is emerging as an international hub for dance and performance, art and exchange, tradition and innovation. The historic Wuppertal Schauspielhaus, a listed building, will be seamlessly connected to a flexible new structure, forming a dynamic whole. This project presents a rare opportunity to create and develop an interdisciplinary arts and cultural institution for the 21st century. The first prize in the international architecture competition was awarded to Diller Scofidio + Renfro, one of the world’s leading architectural firms, based in New York.

Until its official opening, the Pina Bausch Centre remains „under construction“ – both physically and conceptually. Through events and projects, it is actively engaging with local and international communities, fostering connections and shaping its future.

A Place for Everyone

„The Pina Bausch Centre is to become a space for everyone. World-class dance is thus combined with world-class architecture. Pina Bausch's work is unique for North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany”, states the Minister of Culture Ina Brandes

The centre welcomes people of all generations, cultures, and backgrounds to experience and co-create art in all its forms. As a meeting place for dance, research, and society, it will serve as a source of inspiration for Wuppertal and the global cultural community. Here, tradition meets innovation—a living archive of Pina Bausch’s legacy and, at the same time, a laboratory for the art and culture for tomorrow.

The Pina Bausch Centre is a project by the City of Wuppertal, co-funded by the State of North-Rhine Westphalia and the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, in collaboration with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and the Pina Bausch Foundation.
