Lito Walkey: untitled (See photos in Modern Dance Reviews) Leaps with arm tossed into the air were the basic elements of the piece, interlaced with floor work with the dancer occasionally sliding on the fabric of her black pants. Walkey danced without music most of the time. The stage was delimited by a slide projector-illuminated area. Gaps between "slides" served as punctuation at the beginning, but the timing became random as the dance progressed. As a whole the piece was gentle and delicate, in spite of leap series which left the dancer panting. After such a series she just stood there breathing heavily for a couple of seconds. This would be unacceptable a generation ago, showing how deeply our view of stage dance changed. Neither performers nor the audience needs to conceal the physical nature of dance any more, even in a tender piece like this. In the final part, Walkey systematically covered the whole stage by leaps for a second time, but her arms acted in an opposite way: instead of releasing imaginary objects, she was grabbing and collecting them by pulling them towards her body. The 30 minutes long piece has been labeled "work in progress", making one curious how the piece looks when it is considered completed. Autor: Petr Karlovsky |
